ABS is a strong, impact-resistant plastic that is often used in structural applications. Its rigidity, toughness and glossy finish make it one of the most widely-used thermoplastics.

Variants

Polypropylene is typically divided into Homopolymer or Copolymer grades. Homopolymer is the most widely used and is a good general purpose grade. Copolymers are subdivided into Random Copolymer, Block Copolymer and Impact Copolymer. Random Copolymer is flexible and offers good clarity for products that need transparency. Block Copolymer is less brittle than Random Copolymer and more suited for applications needing a stronger material. Impact Copolymer offers better impact resistance. Flame-retardant and reinforced grades are available.

Polypropylene has more applications than could possibly be listed here. Homopolymer is often used in textiles, packaging, pipes and automotive applications. Random Copolymer can be found in test tubes and lab ware. Block Copolymer is frequently used in industrial applications. Impact Copolymer

Insight

Polypropylene prices have fluctuated massively since the start of the COVID pandemic. From severe material shortages driving prices up to previously unimagined levels, we then saw production catch up with demand and prices fall dramatically as Far Eastern producers diverted stock to Europe in the face of reduced demand from a China in lockdown. Prices dropped sharply in August for some grades but not others, as distributors found themselves with stock bought at lots of different prices. Some chose to clear the shelves at a loss whilst others tried to recoup their costs leading to price differences of £500-£1000 per tonne from grade to grade. With production scaled back in Autumn and China waking up, shipping and energy costs rising, availability is starting to tighten again and prices appear to be creeping back up.
